Bartleby's Brain

Bartleby the Scrivner was the crazy Herman Melville story in which a copier of legal documents controls an entire office by way of the passive aggressive phrase "I prefer not to."

What goes on in the mind of Bartleby intrigues the story's narrator.

At one point in my life I acquired a stray street mutt on the streets of L.A., and he looked forlorn in all the ways Bartleby was described by Melville, and so he became my "Bartleby."

Through the years I have assigned the name to not only pets, but to myself as well while working in the circulation room of a major newspaper where we were told not to use our real names when answering the phone. "Circulation. This is Bart Scrivner. May I help you?"

And so this blog shall look into thoughts which are my own, as channeled through the brain of Bartleby.
